I'm showing my age here, but when NWA and co. came out in the mid 80's I thought they were pretty fresh/exciting and had something socially and politically relevant to say. Early efforts at fusing rap and rock (Anthrax/Public Enemy) were also pretty cool and eventually resulted in Rage Against the Machine (there was also Nu-Metal, unfortunately )

Now, most rap I hear is just lazy formulaic shit. And gangsta rap...... brainless mysogynist wank.... I've packing heat mutha fucka; where's da bitches. yawn.

I wouldn't dismiss a whole genre of music, but I do think a lot of rap has gone in a very uninteresting direction. That's the problem when something a bit dangerous / radical becomes mainstream.

Rapping isn't a style of music it's a vocal style and lots of early hip hop and gangsta rap is some of the best music ever made.

NWA were good.. Grandmaster flash.. obviously they were both before my time but my borther has a million and one old school hiphop cd's so i grew up with it =). unfortunately the bleak truth is, music is seen more for the pound/dollar sign than the heart and soul now days.. i wish i was born in the 80s aha.. wether it was bad or bette i cant say.. but least hair was fun.

The point i was trying to make is that you get rappers like kanye west that will just say a bunch of words over some one else's music that they have put all the effort into, but dont get as much recognition for the song. It just realy gets on my nerves how people with actual talent like newton faulkner for example, will never get as much recognition for there music (or money) like 50cent or eminem.

its just that i have heard a fair few new bands recently that i think just arent putting enough effort into there music, it just seems to me that most bands starting out now care more about trying to get signed and sell merch before taking another look at the music.
