Yoo!
Ive just resprayed my old guitar too!
What i did, was sand off all the original paintwork, down to the bare wood.

Make sure you remove the electrics inside, so dust doesnt get into them, and make the pots crackle.

Then make sure the woods clean from dust and the shizzle, them apply grey primer (you can get a decent cheap can from the pound shop in ankerside) Sand it then with some VERY fine sand paper, to make it smooth!
Then id reccomend leaving it to settle for a day or two..

Clear the dust again and then get your paint!
Basically, i went to Halfords and used a metallic car spray paint, or just use acrylic spray paint would do.
Just take your time when spraying it, use 5 or 6 thin coats of paint, so its all smooth. I tried to rush and do it all in one.. it didnt end well, and i had to start again. So be careful! I bought quick drying paint, so i left it for about 15 mins, but its all down to the type of paint.

Also you need some clear coat varnish spray; you can get that from halfords too! Again, a few thin coats are much better than a thick one!

Hope it helps!

Thats the only thing i wouldn't do! You may sand down the primer in order to flatten down high spots, however the primer is an aid to help the paint stick to the body, Therefore sanding it until its smooth will not help the paint stick! Thats why primer is a matte colour rather than glossy :D

The hardest part is clear coating. When you apply a clear coat, do it in small layers (as with the paint) it may not look shiny after tons of coats, but this is because it needs sanding. Leave it to cure for about a week, then start with fine sand paper and work down to 0000 grit (steel wool is 0000 i think) then buff it heavily with a cloth.... takes AGES to do. patience is the key!

I've learnt all sorts of lessons about customising guitars through often painful experience. I have an original 1989 Ibanez RG550 which I respray every year. For what it's worth, here's my advice.

1. Sand the body right down and don't forget primer.
2. Car spray paint is ace, you can mix it up and have loads of fun.
3. Be VERY, VERY patient. Take a couple of weeks and just spray a bit each day otherwise you can
totally ruin all your good work. I'm terrible at this as I always get a bit too excited when it's almost
finished and end up with a bit of lumpy paint where the stuff has run.
4. Get a solid piece of wood and screw it into the body of the guitar so you can hold it or clamp it while
spraying. You're gonna be gutted if you try to just prop your guitar up while spraying and it topples over.
5. Keep your paint layers as thin as poss. A thick paint finish will dull your sound quite noticeably. You only
need a very slim layer of clear lacquer to seal in your brilliant new paint job.

At the moment my beloved RG Ibanez is purple, but it sounds like shit cos I sprayed it way too thick. I must sand it down again at some point this year!
